Requirements for Renting a Car
Renting a car in Costa Rica requires travellers to meet certain eligibility conditions that apply across both local and international car rental companies.
Age Requirements
The minimum and maximum ages to rent a car are generally 21 and 75 years. Drivers below or above the required age are subject to a young or senior driver fee, as stated in the supplier terms. Certain car segments may be restricted for specified age groups by suppliers, depending on the location.
Credit Card
A valid Visa, MasterCard, or American Express credit card in the primary driver’s name is required by rental companies for holding a security deposit at the time of car pickup. Bookings may be denied or cancelled without a credit card, as the deposit to ensure the financial safety of the vehicles cannot be processed.
Proof of Identity
Companies often require a valid ID or passport to verify your booking at their rental desk as part of the standard industry process. While the local renters may just need their national IDs, international travellers must also provide their passports. The name on the ID proof must also match the name on the rental agreement.
Driver’s License
A full driver’s licence held for at least 1 year (with no major endorsements) is necessary at car rental pickup. An International Driving Permit (IDP) or an English translation of the original licence will also be required for drivers with licences issued in non-Roman alphabets (e.g., Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese).
